i know you’ve been on the edge of your seat. “what is she reading?” you’re wondering. it’s been months, hasn’t it?, since i gave you the big book update. well, take a breath, here we go. i finished sarah willis’s newest novel, the sound of us. verdict: utterly disappointing. everything charming and delightful about her first [...] i feel ill equipped to review “housekeeping.” honestly, i wasn’t sure i would enjoy it, especially after trying robinson’s pulitzer prize winning “gilead” and only managing to stomach a few pages. and even more so after attending a reading of robinson’s a few years ago: i found her arrogant and self-satisfied. i could hardly stand [...] thank goodness this book is back in print.read it religiously, once a year. tune out the kids. turn off the TV. light a candle. melt into something soft. and just read. read read read. it’s the tale of prue sarne, a woman stricken with a hare-lip (or rather, a cleft-lip, for those of us who need [...] [thankful for a book-a-day advent to thanksgiving: 5 days left] when i was a boy i liked to write. it was the only thing i wanted to do with my life. i invented imaginary people and filled notebooks with their stories. i wrote about a boy who grew up and got so hairy people wanted him [...] [book-a-day advent to thanksgiving: 9 days left] i love love love this book. (so i’ve loved loved loved all the books this month. but if i was stranded on a desert island and i was feeling particularly girly and i just needed a romance, i would smuggle this book under my shirt, along with rope, matches, and [...] |
