    cleveland, adieu - 8

goodbye, tino’s. you shady little bar next to the rally’s drive-through on mayfield. i will miss walking through your swinging door with a baby on my hip having all those ladies in the dollar store parking lot eyeing me and thinking, “what in the world is she taking a baby into a bar for in the middle of the afternoon?” but i don’t mind them. they don’t know what i know. they don’t know that before getting to the heart of tino’s, there’s another door. and this one takes you into cleveland’s own bona-fida russian grocery. they don’t speak english in here. oh no. it’s all “Здравствуйте!” and “Как поживаете?” and if you have a hankering for real, honest-to-goodness homemade smetana, this is the place for it. i will miss stocking up on pelmeni and mayonnaise in a bag. i will miss surprising the little old woman behind the counter by saying things like, “Добрый день.” i will miss the case of fish heads. i will miss the bins of candy i’ve never liked. i will miss walking into the store on humid day and having fierce flashbacks to the months i lived in rostov. i will miss you, little piece of russia.

I’m glad you were able to find something like that in Cleveland. Maybe there will be something like it in Ann Arbor…I hope so.
