helplessly ridiculously mom

so. since the tubes, henry has had two ear infections. (or the ear infection he had when they put the tubes in never went away.)

the kid is oozy and green and uncomfortable. i listened to a gigantic pediatrician (he really was gigantic) as he looked in little hal’s ear: “wow. that looks bad.”

i’m sorry, but i am helpless and ridiculous and close to tears all day long. i know he doesn’t have childhood leukemia or cancer or bubonic plague, but i’m so tired in my head and my heart. i’m so tired of holding his head against my chest while very tall men poke things in his ear. i’m so tired of feeling like i shouldn’t take him to children’s museums and large gatherings of children hunting for eggs. i’m so tired of not being able to make things better.

any advice? veteran ear infection moms?

  • i’m so sorry that his big ear infection has taken over his little ears. ben (3 y/o) just had a doozy of an ear infection recently. his tubes drained and drained. i kept putting the floxin into his canals morning and evening, but that infection lingered on for almost 3 weeks! finally, after two weeks of having an ear infection and not having it stop draining they told me that the ear was so inflamed that the medicine probably wasn’t getting to his ear. they taught me a trick. after you put the drop(s) in his ear, push on the face/ear closest to the cheek. i’m having a hard time describing this accurately. there is a little flap of skin/cartalidge that kind of connects the ear to the face. If you push gently on it after you put the drops in, in creates a sort of sucking motions which draws the liquid into the ear canal. it’s hard to explain. my doctor showed me how to do it on a plastic model ear in his office. they also finally gave me some anti-inflammatory drops(a steroid maybe?) that helped his ear stop swelling inside. “they” also said that it could be viral and the drops would do nothing. thanks a lot for that one. i also gave ben regular doses of ibuprofin for the pain. i hope he gets better quickly. just be patient and pray a lot :) has he had a blessing?

I have no good advice for you, but I just wanted to say I’m so sorry! It’s the worst when your precious baby is sick, for any reason big or small, and I just wanted to say good luck and hang in there!

Aw, Jessie, I’m so sorry for you and your little boy. I wish I could say something that would help, but the promise that “this too, shall pass” doesn’t really make you feel much better when you have to watch your child in pain. Here’s to healthy ears soon.

  • Ditto, no advice on ear infections. But I do know that Abby is banned from social places (church, and anything indoors) during RSV season and it doesn’t even seem to matter. She still gets sick (luckily not RSV though). Hang in there. Poor henry, I’d hold him for you if I lived near by. What a sweetheart.

Sorry to hear about these horrible ear problems. I don’t really have any advice as I am not a mother, but I had similar problems all the time when I was small and I do remember hurting deep inside my ears. And just feeling awful. No fun. I’m sure little Henry is not happy, which must make you really not happy. Good luck!

Option 1: Go to some kind of health food or preparedness store and get some colloidal silver… Silver Sol or ASAP are the best, most certified brands… smallest size particles… put a few drops in his ear several times a day, and IF POSSIBLE have him lie on his side to keep it in for at least a minute (better yet, ten. But that’s rarely realistic). This will kill it whether it’s viral or bacterial… anything not oxygen dependent (so the good bacteria in our bodies actually don’t mind it — FYI in case you’re planning to ingest it any time). This has worked for us and our friends MANY TIMES. From tears to forgot all about it in as little as 20 minutes. It’s also the BEST thing for PINKEYE — it works faster and stings SO MUCH LESS than the prescription drops.
Option 2: I have people who swear by this, but I’ve never tried it: Buy some Gelcaps of Garlic oil (it’s usually in Olive oil or something, so it’s not as scary as it sounds). Pop one, and drip it into his ear. This has worked for people who haven’t been able to find any other cure… maybe it should be a first attempt instead of last resort.
Other help #1: Try taking him completely off dairy for a week. See if that improves anything.
Other help #2: On each side of his esophagos (SP?), just under his jaw are glands. If you feel lumps like marbles there, you can help them drain (taking away the environment for infection to live) by gently massaging downward — use lotion or olive oil so you don’t rub his skin raw.
    Wow, that was long.
    Good luck!
